About the Journal

Reviews of Economic Literature (REL) is a Diamond Open Access journal (without fees for authors and readers) in the service of the academic community.

Mission Statement
REL disseminates objective and impartial research on developments in the economic literature, free to access for anyone, anywhere, now and in the future. It seeks to free academic journals from commercial publishers. Founded on the goodwill of the academic community and independence of peer reviewers and editors, REL maintains integrity in scholarly research and its publication.

Aims and Scope
REL publishes original peer-reviewed syntheses of economic research. Articles provide critical overviews, analyses, and contextual understanding that define expert human research—not automated summarizations—to generate new knowledge. REL seeks to inform economists about developments in the literature beyond their own immediate specialization, while being accessible to specialist and non-specialist readers interested in economics. It welcomes submissions that represent cogent reviews of recent research, bibliometric studies, and meta-analyses on all aspects of the economic literature. The editors also identify special topics for which they invite contributions. The subject areas of interest include, but are not limited to, economics, econometrics, economic history, financial economics, business economics, and accounting.

Governance
REL is owned by a not-for-profit company with charitable purposes. The company constitution stipulates that the company must be maintained exclusively for charitable purposes and this requirement cannot be changed. REL cannot be operated for private profit, and it cannot be sold or given to a for-profit commercial publisher or entity. The journal editors are the company’s shareholders and appoint the directors of the company. The directors are responsible for ensuring compliance with the charitable purposes of the company and must act in its best interest. They appoint co-editors-in-chief and managing editors, who appoint associate editors, and advisory board members. All appointments are non-remunerable positions for 5-year renewable terms. The co-editors-in-chief and managing editors also appoint the journal manager.

Archiving
REL archives all published articles through the Public Knowledge Project Preservation Network (PKP PN).

Acknowledgements
The Italian Law Firm Target | www.targetlaw.it provided pro bono assistance to the editors in the transition towards and foundation of Reviews of Economic Literature by supporting them in the negotiations with Stanford University Press and helping them reach the contractual agreement which has kicked off the new editorial collaboration.

Target also assisted the editors in their contractual dispute with Wiley when they sat on the board of the Journal of Economic Surveys. Target advised in the negotiations which eventually led to the termination of the relationship and helped manage communication concerning such termination.
