About the Journal
Population Biology Modeling & Theory (PBMT) is a peer-reviewed journal reporting advances in modeling and theory in population biology, covering areas including demography, ecology, epidemiology, evolutionary biology, population genetics, and phylogenetics. In addition to research articles, the journal also publishes commentaries, scholarly reviews, software notes, and pedagogical articles.
PBMT is the journal of the Society for Modeling & Theory in Population Biology. Founded in 2025 and published by Stanford University Press, PBMT is a society-owned publication that emphasizes serving the needs of the modeling & theory community. In 2026 the journal is supported through its publisher's limited grant funding and remains under a Diamond Open Access model, meaning there are no APCs or subscription fees to publish or read. In 2027 the journal is planning to transition to the Subscribe to Open model, in order to continue offering $0 APCs for authors.
Why PBMT?
Mathematical modeling and theory are central to fields of biology that study populations, notably including ecology, evolution, and population genetics, as well as demography, population dynamics, phylogenetics, and infectious disease epidemiology. Mathematical traditions in these biological areas have a long history, co-existing alongside empirical studies that involve laboratory and field research. PBMT builds on the long history of research that studies phenomena in population biology to provide a community-oriented record for the field. PBMT seeks to publish research of the highest quality, emphasizing contributions to modeling and theory. The journal serves the scientific community both in its scientific content and in its publication model as a society-owned community-oriented open-access publication.
