08/18 Paul (Pál) Turán was born in 1910 in Budapest, Hungary
09/26 Paul (Pál) Turán died in 1976 in Budapest, Hungary
Please spend a moment reminiscing about Paul. A giant of Approximation Theory
whose impact is still felt all over in our community. Paul was very proud of
the anecdote about him and his determinants that took place on a train while
traveling to the Amsterdam ICM in 1954. If anyone finds a web-reference for
it, please let me know at aat@nevai.us and then I will reproduce the story
here (I heard the story from Paul and I could recall it here but I'd like to
quote it from Paul directly because he was a much better story teller than I
am). I am forever grateful to him for more reasons than I can list here. Let
me just mention one: the M-class originates from a problem Paul raised in
1974.
Paul Turán, we love you.
